[ENGLISH VERSION]It’s because he was bored that 27-year-old photographer Albert Elm has begun photography 14 years ago. « What sort of life is this » is the compulsive photography work of a restless teenager who channelled his energy through his camera lens.

« I got my first camera when I was about 13 years old. I was bored at a family birthday, so my cousin loaned me his camera. I was a very restless child, and it was as if the camera gave that restlessness a purpose. Something to focus my energy into. I would photograph my friends and we would laugh about the pictures when I had them developed. At that time, I didn’t know much about photography, beyond my own relationship to it. I think it managed to turn my boredom into curiosity.

As I’ve become older, I don’t document my everyday life to the extent I did earlier. My curiosity has become more specific, maybe more refined. To stay creative in everyday life photography, we need to create recognizable metaphors for life that makes us think about our own existence in new ways. And contribute to something that’s bigger than our selves. »

[VERSION FRANÇAISE] C’est parce qu’il s’ennuyait qu’Albert Elm, jeune photographe de 27 ans, a commencé la photographie il y a 14 ans. « What sort of life is this » est le travail photographique compulsif d’un adolescent agité pour qui l’objectif de son appareil photo fait figure de canalisateur.

« J’ai eu ma première caméra quand j’avais environ 13 ans. Comme je m’ennuyais à un anniversaire de famille, mon cousin m’a prêté son appareil photo. J’étais un enfant très agité, et la caméra a donné un but à cette agitation. Quelque chose dans lequel j’ai pu concentrer mon énergie. Je photographiais mes amis et, une fois que j’avais développé les images, nous en rigolions ensemble. À cette époque, je ne connaissais pas grand chose à la photographie en dehors du rapport personnel que j’entretenais avec. Je pense que ces premières images ont réussi à transformer mon ennui en curiosité.

Aujourd’hui, j’ai muri. Je ne documente plus ma vie quotidienne comme je le faisais avant. Ma curiosité est devenue plus spécifique, peut-être plus raffinée. Pour rester créatif dans la photographie du quotidien, nous avons besoin de créer des métaphores qui nous permettent de réfléchir sur nos propres vies de manière nouvelle. Et ainsi contribuer à quelque chose qui soit plus grand que simplement nous-mêmes. »
